If you're exercising regularly, then you are obviously committed to living a healthy lifestyle. But did you know that the way you prepare for the gym can effect your results? Follow these tips to maximize your energy and get the most out of your workout:

1. Get your beauty sleep

Sleep is when your muscles recover and recharge for the day ahead. If you're sleepy, you're going to be sluggish, which is not conducive to a good workout. Plus, lack of sleep can trigger hunger hormones that could cause you to overindulge on snacks and undo all of your hard work.

2. Hydrate!

 If you have a gym trip scheduled, be sure you are getting in your recommended amount of water with plenty of time to spare. A hydrated body functions as it should, and you'll sweat out a lot of that water while you're out there slaying that spin class. 

3. ...but not too much

"Uh oh, I've barely had any water today." We've all had that moment of realization on our way to the gym. It can be tempting to just chug a bunch of water on our way in, but that's actually a bad idea. Your kidneys can only process a liter of water an hour, any more than that can lead to serious consequences such as blood dilution. But even if you aren't throwing back an entire 2 liter of water, you should still take it easy. Engaging in physical activity with a stomach full of water can leave you nauseous and cramping.

4. fuel the machine

Make sure you're not going into your workout hungry. Eat a balanced meal a few hours before hitting the gym. If you're still hungry, grab a light snack (around 150 calories) so you aren't going hard on an empty tank.

5. warm up

The benefits of a warm up are literal: it gives you time to raise your body temperature, increase range of motion, and prepare yourself for your workout. Consider a face paced walk on the treadmill or some dynamic stretches to get your body ready to go.
