5 essential tips for back to school
stay on top of your game.
Whether you're a student or not, there’s no denying that summer is the time we all let loose and relax a bit. Hopefully you’re refreshed, because Back to School season is right around the corner, and that means returning to the routine… which can be a tough adjustment if you’re unprepared. That’s why we’ve prepped you with 5 Essential Tips for staying healthy.
1. Have a Bedtime
You probably already know that sleep affects your mood and energy level, but did you know that sleep also plays a big role in your physical health? Sleep is involved in the healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.
Possibly the easiest way to stay healthy, hydration is vital to your survival. Fluids carry nutrients to cells in every part of your body. That means when you aren't drinking enough water, your whole body suffers. The American Institute of Medicine recommends that you drink at least 10 cups of water a day, but a staggering 75% of the population falls short of the minimum. Carry a water bottle, and consume other hydrating fluids like coconut water… the key ingredient in our delicious Coco Pro smoothie.
3. Find Small Ways to Exercise
A fitness routine is ideal, but on days when you can’t squeeze in a trip to the gym, look for opportunities to work a muscle or boost your heart rate. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, do leg lifts at your desk, or go on a family walk after dinner. Even the smallest bit of exercise can boost your mood, keeping you energized and motivated to make healthy decisions.
4. Know What You’re Putting in Your Body
When you’re grocery shopping, pay close attention to nutrition labels. Look for nutrient-rich foods with high levels of fiber, calcium, iron, and calcium. Try to limit things like sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat. Avoid fast food as much as possible (if you’re in a hurry, you can always swing by your juice bar and grab some of our fresh, ready-to-go meals.)
5. Manage Stress
Stress activates your fight-or-flight instincts, which release cortisol into your bloodstream. High levels of cortisol interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increase weight gain, and increase risk of heart disease... The list goes on and on. Find ways to counteract stress, like deep breathing exercises or meditation practices. Take small breaks during your day and watch something that makes you laugh (laughter releases hormones that are the antidote to cortisol… proving that in this case, it really is the best medicine.) By taking time to reduce stress, you actually set yourself up to be more productive in the long run.
